China Wine Import Statistics - July 2021
While the China market is still recovering from the double whammy hit of Covid-19 followed by the effective exit of Australia from the market due to the punitive tariffs established at the end of 2020, there are a few key points to note from the most recent release of topline import data from China customs as follows:
Average price per case has held steady despite the collapse in 2021 of what was by far the leading country for average case price, Australia.
In 2020 all other major countries of origin were below the total average price per case, whereas they have all risen in 2021, and now especially France plus Italy are well above the average and have contributed to sustaining the average price per case despite the void left by Australia.
It appears that with Australia’s exit, as predicted Chile and South Africa are benefiting more at the commercial end whereas France and to an extent Italy appear to be benefitting at the more premium end, indicated by change in average prices.
We will be posting the topline China import stats on a regular monthly basis so be sure to look out for them next month!
