GREYSTONE wines AWARDED CHAMPION ORGANIC TROPHY FROM INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION 2023

North Canterbury Winery beats the best on world stage.

Waipara winery Greystone Wines has beat the biggest traditional wine houses in the world, picking up the highly sought-after Organic Trophy at the International Wine Challenge.

This announcement comes just weeks after Greystone gathered three distinguished trophies for its 2021 Organic Chardonnay at the same competition.

The IWC, one of the longest-running international wine shows which is based in London and is renowned for its rigorous judging process and esteemed panel of experts, has recognised Greystone Wines for its long-term commitment to the environment and organic winemaking.

GM of Sales & Marketing Stephen McGowan says this award is the ultimate recognition of Greystone, its team, and their commitment to organic practices and regenerative viticulture.

“As much as we love to win, it's not about seeking accolades or chasing show victories. Instead, it's about being acknowledged on the global stage, which serves as a powerful reminder that we are on the right path.”

These awards are judged blind by some of the world’s most respected wine experts.

Winemaker Dom Maxwell says the Organic Trophy is a huge achievement for such a small-scale operation.

“We’re a tiny region in a tiny country producing some of the world’s best wines and awards like this validate that.”

At the IWC, New Zealand came away with 38 gold medals for its wine, marking its place on the leaderboard as one of the top 12 wine-producing countries.

Among the awards, 13 went to Chardonnay, beating strong wine competitors France and Australia.

Stephen says scoring 97 points and beating the world’s greatest old & new world Chardonnay’s in such a prestigious competition validates everything Greystone strives for.

“This achievement reinforces our belief that it is entirely feasible to produce extraordinary wines that are the finest examples of their respective varieties worldwide while prioritizing organic farming practices and sustainability.”

“We are proud to be making a positive impact on the planet while crafting wines of unparalleled quality.”

With a win like this, Stephen says the team feels privileged to represent Waipara & New Zealand on the world wine stage.

“New Zealand has long been celebrated for its exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, but our Chardonnays often remain under the radar. This win demonstrates that NZ is not limited to a single varietal and possesses the climate, talent, skills, and expertise to excel across different grape varieties & wine styles.”
